Epic Highlights & Experiences Awaiting You

Picturesque Appi Kogen

Located in the Hachimantai mountain range, Appi Kogen transforms into a vibrant summer haven. Lush forests, rolling hills, and clear mountain streams create a setting that is both inspiring and restorative. This serene alpine environment provides the perfect backdrop for exploration, learning, and personal reflection.

Harrow Appi Residential School Experience

Hosted at AISL Harrow Appi, students enjoy a distinctive residential Harrow international school experience. Living and learning on campus allows students to fully immerse themselves in an environment that blends education, nature, and alpine sports, while fostering independence and strong peer connections.

Mountain Biking Excursion

As part of the outdoor adventure journey, students take part in a guided mountain biking excursion across Appi’s scenic alpine trails. A comprehensive safety briefing and skills session prepares students to ride with confidence, while teambased challenges along the route encourage cooperation, perseverance, and shared achievement.

Farm Life & Community Connection

At the heart of the programme is its authentic engagement with rural life, offering students rare access to working farms and community initiatives that reflect how people live, work, and care for the land in Japan.

  • Participation in a Satoyama grassland regeneration project introduces students to traditional land stewardship practices, highlighting how human activity and ecological sustainability are carefully balanced.
  • A horse care and therapy programme at a local farm allows students to take responsibility for feeding, grooming, and caring for horses, maintaining stables, and supporting the daily rhythms of farm life.
  • A blueberry harvest and farmtotable workshop guides students through the full journey of food production — from growing and harvesting to sorting, packing, and preparing produce for sale, culminating in the making of homemade blueberry jam.

Nature Exploration & Survival Skills

Students explore the alpine environment through guided outdoor experiences that build curiosity, confidence, and respect for nature.

  • Flora and fauna discovery walks introduce local plant and animal life and how they interact within alpine ecosystems.
  • A guided lava hike and mountain trek offer insight into volcanic landscapes, geology, and environmental change.
  • A gondola ride and scenic hike provide perspective on scale, terrain, and the diversity of the alpine environment.

Alongside exploration, students take part in practical survival skills training, developing outdoor safety awareness, problemsolving skills, teamwork, and selfreliance.

Cultural Craft & Local Traditions

Culture comes alive through handson craftsmanship and genuine personal exchange, offering students meaningful access to traditions that are typically experienced only within local communities.

  • A traditional mochimaking experience hosted in the home of local residents invites students into a family setting, where they learn how glutinous rice is prepared, steamed, pounded, shaped, and served before sharing freshly made mochi together in the traditional way.
  • Traditional Japanese tiedye workshops introduce students to creative expression rooted in heritage, while friendship bracelet making symbolises connection and shared experience.
  • Visits and interactions with local residents provide firsthand insight into daily life, customs, and values in rural Japan, encouraging thoughtful conversation and cultural exchange.

Final Adventure and Reflection

The programme culminates in the Rocket Building Challenge. Students complete tasks to earn resources, purchase rocket components, assemble their designs, and compete to see whose rocket travels the furthest — developing problem‑solving skills, teamwork, and resilience along the way. A reflective gathering and celebratory feast provide a fitting conclusion, marking the end of an unforgettable journey.
