2026 AO Summer Camp
Thrill Engineering (Day Camp)
Thrill Engineering (Day Camp)
Thrill Engineering is an immersive, hands-on STEM programme that challenges students to think and work like real engineers. Rather than following instructions or assembling predesigned models, learners design, build, test, and refine complete roller coaster systems under authentic engineering constraints. Mathematics and physics are experienced in action as students measure velocity, analyse energy transfer, calculate g-forces, and explore real roller coaster geometry—including circular, cycloid, and brachistochrone curves—to understand why modern designs prioritise safety and performance.

Programme Highlights
- A True Engineering Design Experience: Students engage in the full engineering cycle: designing, building, testing, analysing, and refining. Projects evolve over multiple iterations, reinforcing that strong engineering solutions are developed—not guessed.
- Advanced Mathematics & Physics—Made Tangible: Algebra, geometry, ratios, scale, and physics principles are applied directly to physical systems. Students use equations to explain motion, calculate forces, and predict outcomes—then test their predictions against reality.
- Real Roller Coaster Geometry & Design Logic: Learners investigate circular loops, cycloid loops, and brachistochrone curves, comparing speed, safety, and rider experience. They discover why realworld engineers abandon “simple” shapes in favour of optimised designs.
- EvidenceBased, DataDriven Decisions: Students collect precise timing data, mass measurements, and distance values, organise results into tables, analyse trends, and use evidence to justify every design change they make.
- Creativity Within Real Constraints: Design challenges such as jumps, backward motion, and safety limits require students to innovate while respecting physical laws. Creativity is rewarded—but only when supported by sound reasoning.
- Deep STEM Integration: Mathematics, physics, and engineering converge into one coherent project, helping students see how individual subjects connect and reinforce one another in authentic problem solving.
- Clear Technical Communication: Students explain designs, calculations, and results using precise mathematical and scientific language, developing the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and confidently.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of Coaster Engineering, students will be able to:
1) Design and Evaluate Engineering Systems
- Build a functioning roller coaster model using real engineering principles
- Balance safety, performance, materials, and physical constraints
2) Apply Mathematics to Real Motion
- Use algebra, geometry, ratios, and scale conversions to model physical systems
- Interpret equations as descriptions of realworld behaviour
3) Explain Motion Using Physics
- Analyse velocity, acceleration, friction, gforces, and energy transformations
- Link observed outcomes to underlying physical laws
4) Collect, Analyse, and Interpret Data
- Design experiments, record accurate measurements, and organise data clearly
- Identify trends and draw justified, evidencebased conclusions
5) Demonstrate Engineering Thinking
- Form hypotheses, test ideas, revise designs, and defend decisions
- Compare alternative designs and explain which performs best—and why
