2026 AO Summer Camp

BotBuilders: From Code to Stage (Day Camp)

BotBuilders: From Code to Stage (Day Camp)

BotBuilders: From Code to Stage is an immersive, high-energy, five-day robotics experience where students move far beyond watching robots in action—they become the engineers, programmers, and directors behind them. Beginning with a box of mechanical and electronic parts, students design, assemble, and code a two-legged walking robot, transforming raw components into a responsive machine that can move, react, and perform on command.

Programme Highlights

  • Build a TwoLegged Walking Robot from the Ground Up: Students assemble a complete bipedal robot, installing joints, servos, sensors, and controllers while learning how structure, balance, and motion work together.
  • From Code to Physical Motion: Visual coding comes alive as students write programmes that control walking sequences, turning, reactions, and performance routines—seeing their code translated instantly into realworld movement.
  • Real Robotics, Real Hardware: Students work directly with motors, sensors, and controllers, discovering how robots sense their environment, respond to inputs, and maintain balance.
  • Master the Mechanics of Walking: Explore step phases, timing, coordination, and centre of mass while designing unique walking styles and testing them in friendly challenges.
  • Engineering Through Iteration: Debug mechanical issues, refine code, and adjust designs—learning that failure is part of the engineering process and improvement comes through iteration.
  • Bring Robots to Life with Personality: Add interactions such as obstacle avoidance, guard modes, and expressive movements, transforming robots from machines into characters ready for the stage.
  • Collaboration, Communication, and Confidence: Students work in teams, share ideas, and practise explaining how their robots work—building technical confidence alongside teamwork skills.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the programme, students will be able to:

  • Design, Build, and Control a Walking Robot: Assemble, wire, calibrate, and program a twolegged robot capable of standing, walking, reacting, and performing.
  • Understand Core Robotics Systems: Explain how actuators, sensors, joints, and controllers work together to create coordinated movement and responsive behaviour.
  • Translate Programming Logic into RealWorld Action: Use loops, custom blocks, and control logic to manage timing, balance, and interaction in a physical robot.
  • Apply Structured Engineering ProblemSolving: Diagnose issues, test solutions, and iteratively improve both hardware and software.
  • Collaborate and Communicate as Engineers: Work effectively in teams, give and receive feedback, and clearly explain technical ideas.
  • Confidently Present a Live Robotics Performance: Introduce their robot, explain a key concept they mastered, and showcase a choreographed routine to an audience.
