Programme Director

DR ANTHONY SPECA FRGS FRSA
Dr Anthony Speca is Founding Principal of Polar Aspect, a consultancy focused on the Arctic. He has advised government particularly on issues of Arctic governance and fiscal policy. He has also published articles on Arctic issues, and he has spoken about the Arctic to various organisations and universities. He has lived and worked in the Canadian Arctic, and he has travelled elsewhere in the North American and European Arctic.
Dr Speca views the Arctic first and foremost as a homeland, especially for its Indigenous peoples, where human development and environmental sustainability both matter. Inspired to share this vision of the Arctic with younger generations, in 2016 Anthony created and launched the world’s only secondary-school Model Arctic Council (MAC) programme. He has since offered numerous MAC conferences in collaboration with schools in the UK and Spain, as well as undergraduate MAC conferences in collaboration with universities in the UK and Canada. He also launched an online MAC delegate training and conference programme for schools, and Polar Aspect MACs have reached hundreds of students from many countries. Dr Speca combines this innovative educational work with faculty appointments to Norwich School, the University of East Anglia and the Scottish Association for Marine Science in the UK, and formerly also to Trent University in Canada. He has taught Philosophy, Politics, Economics and Geography at upper secondary-school level, and Geography and Circumpolar Studies at university level. He formerly served as Managing Director of the UArctic Læra Institute for Circumpolar Education, an institute that he helped to establish.
Why MAC?
As climate change accelerates and geopolitics intensifies, the Arctic has emerged as one of the most critical regions on the planet. Through their groundbreaking Model Arctic Council (MAC) simulations—the only programme of its kind for secondary schools globally—Polar Aspect immerses students in realistic role-play, confronting them with the urgent challenges facing the Arctic, its peoples, and its environment.
MAC equips students with a diverse set of skills and knowledge essential for success in high school, college, and beyond:
- Public Speaking: Students deliver their first speech in front of an audience, building confidence and communication skills.
- Research & Analysis: They hone their ability to gather and synthesize information from across the globe.
- Policy Writing: Students practice drafting policies while gaining insights into cultures they may never have encountered before.
- Leadership & Social Skills: Whether tackling complex issues, learning to compromise, or stepping into leadership for the first time, students "find their voice" and unlock their leadership potential.
MAC not only boosts students' confidence but also:
- Supports University Applications: Participation in MAC distinguishes students as globally-minded, skilled leaders in competitive university applications.
- Prepares for Prestigious Careers: The programme builds a foundation for success in fields like diplomacy, environmental policy, international law, and global business.
MAC empowers students to lead in a rapidly evolving world, equipping them with the tools to succeed academically, socially, and professionally.
